Jennifer Harding , commonly called "Rei" by her friends, is the pilot of the Black Tigers who serves aboard the United Nations Cosmo Navy. She became a member of the Star Force when she was assigned for duty onboard the Argo in 2199. Soon after joining the Black Tigers, Harding distinguishes herself as the ship's most capable combat flyer.

Personality
Harding conducts her work and her personal affairs with obvious passion. That passion can easily turn into ferocity, both in battle against her enemies and in her personal interactions. Nevertheless, Harding maintains a military professionalism that she calls upon in emotionally charged situations.

Friction at the start of the mission to Iscandar does not harm her relationship with Peter Conroy, and she consistently remains close to him. Once the two begin fighting side by side, the sibling-like relationship develops into one between equals.

Jennifer retains a strong emotional bond with her brother Jefferson long after his death. Conroy returns a ruby pendant she had given to Jefferson as a gift, and continues to wear it on a regular basis. She also retains a connection to her Martian roots and self-identifies as a Martian, despite having left the planet as an infant.

History
Jennifer was born in Arcadia Port on Mars, the granddaughter of a woman born on the red planet. Like many who were natives of Mars, conditions on the planet turned her eyes red. Harding and her family were forced to evacuate soon after the Second Inner Planet War and settle on Earth. In her teen years, she and her older brother Jefferson Davis Harding became friends with fellow fighter pilot, Peter Conroy. After Jefferson's death in battle with Gamilon forces and the loss of her remaining family members in the planet bombing of Earth, she accepted Conroy's new role as an older brother figure in her life.

Upon being selected for the Star Force's mission to the planet Iscandar, Harding is assigned to the ship's accounting division. She learns that the leader of the Flying Corps, Lieutenant Conroy, had ignored her education and experience in the cockpit and blocked her admission in an attempt to protect her from danger. Harding's desire to fly cannot be dampened, though, and a mere two days after departing Earth, she steals an advanced Cosmo Zero and engages enemy forces on Enceladus. Conroy joins her in the sky shortly after. Her and Conroy's actions save a mining operation near the wreck of the EDS Paladin, and Conroy sends her to the crash site to aide Derek Wildstar's medical group at the wreck. Only after she arrives back aboard the Argo does Conroy realize that it is her, and he becomes upset. Wildstar, however, recognizes her skill and initiative, and adds her to the ranks of the Black Tigers over Conroy's disapproval.

Harding endures skepticism and teasing from her male comrades in the fighter wing at first, but she immediately dispels any doubts about her worth. Assigned to the ship's second Cosmo Zero fighter, she adeptly pilots through enemy fire during the Second Battle of Pluto and works with Wildstar to locate the cloaked Gamilon base on the dwarf planet, helping to expose it to a devastating artillery assault. She leads an aerial defense of the immediate space around the Argo during the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster after the bulk of the fighter wing is drawn away by a decoy dogfight, she had taking out multiple targets and saved Conroy's life. Several weeks later, Harding takes on Imperial Guard fighter squadrons and carriers at the start of the Battle of Gamilas. She and Conroy later escort Wildstar to a mission to rescue Lieutenant Nova Forrester from a Gamilon space station. During the return voyage to Earth, Harding flies alongside Gamilon fighters against a White Comet Empire fleet invading the planet Shambleau.

She also shows herself to be an effective fighter outside the cockpit. Harding subdues mutinous members of the Star Force security team in hand-to-hand combat during their attempt to abandon the mission to Iscandar. She and Ensign Hiroki Shinohara temporarily halt a Gamiloid boarding party threatening to take control of the Argo during the voyage home, by improvising artillery from the machine gun of a disassembled Cosmo Zero.

Harding significantly bonds with two Star Force members during its first mission. She quickly connects with Wildstar, but for a time she mistakenly interprets his interest as romantic, and is initially upset when he gravitates toward Nova. Among others in the fighter wing, she spends the most time with Shinohara. His relaxed attitude allows them to talk easily with one another, and both of them pray together, but when he attempts to show Harding affection at a wedding reception, she aggressively rejects him.

Her most unexpected friendship is formed with an enemy pilot, Lower Storm Commander Melda Dietz. Harding's personal hatred toward all Gamilons boils over during Dietz's confinement on the Argo, angrily yelling at Dietz in the course of an interrogation. When it appears that Dietz's ship is about to break a deal and abandon the Star Force, Harding tries to shoot her, resulting in a brawl. Harding loses the brawl, but Dietz spares her and returns Harding's gun. She goes on to challenge Dietz to a fighter duel. Once again the Gamilon pilot bests Harding, and she saves her human adversary's life. As punishment for unnecessarily losing a fighter, Harding is sent to the brig for six days. Months later, Dietz returns to the Star Force as a rebel opposing the Gamilon regime, and despite friction between them over Harding's treatment of Yurisha Iscandar, the two come to respect and admire one another.

2202
in 2202, Harding is piloting a experiment fighter. She is station on the Lunar base and is substitute instructor to the new recruits. She trains them hard and even herself. She along with the other members of the Black Tigers abandoned there post to join the Star Force, who are considered mutineers by the United Nations Cosmo Navy. She along with the black tigers had to fight off other Cosmo fighters sent from the Andromeda. The are aided by Klaus Keyman and manage to escape and join the Star Force.
